Genetically Modified Crops: Benefits vs. Risks
Problem Statement
Should the world use genetically modified crops?
Introduction
Genetically modified crops have been a major topic of debate over the past decade. Genetic engineering was introduced to help achieve desired traits in food and food production like increased food production (which could potentially help with malnutrition in third-world countries), less pesticide use (which could be better for the environment), more nutritional value, etc. and the benefits of this type of food production seem very exciting, but there has been discovered evidence that show the harmful effects that come along with this type of crop. This is a big topic of concern because genetically modified foods are prevalent on our grocery store shelves and is currently most of the food that is being eaten by the world’s population. Whether a person is for or against genetically modifying food, there needs to be awareness of the food we eat because a majority of people have little or no education on this type of farming, and it affects virtually everyone, everyday. The debate has been about whether or not these crops pose any legitimate serious and harmful risks to human health and the health of the environment. In this article, we pose the question of, “Are genetically modified foods safe?” and have done research to present both sides of the debate. We will present our findings and hopefully our research will give readers a more informative perspective on this issue.
